Each work of art has a unique physical makeup, aesthetic allure, cultural significance and history — so each object is approached individually, with sensitivity to its material composition, meaning, past and visual appeal. This is how the studio usually works with its clients.
A preliminary 30-minute assessment of the work of art, characterizing its current condition and immediate needs in general terms. Your inquiry can be discussed over the phone, but an appointment to inspect the object in person is preferable — it allows more realistic recommendations and approximate estimates. Good-quality, high-resolution photographs of your painting are welcome for review ahead of the meeting.
This initial meeting is free of charge.
Before any intervention, the conservator carefully inspects the piece to determine how it was constructed and what its current condition reveals. A condition report can be valuable even when nothing looks wrong: it records the painting's quality and risk factors, and serves valuations, insurance decisions, grant applications, and the artwork's record for future conservators and owners.
Fragile portions stabilized. Extraneous matter removed from surfaces. Structural anomalies that put the work's physical integrity at risk addressed, and losses compensated — using only museum-grade conservation materials and techniques. All treatments reflect current conservation practice, employ minimally invasive procedures, and preserve the physical and artistic integrity of the piece and the original intent of the artist.
For every painting treated in the studio, preventive care is part of the work — minimizing the need for further restoration in the foreseeable future. Ultimately the studio's role is to assist you, the temporary custodian of an object from the past, in your commitment to safeguard it for future generations.
